Some more good names. Maybe not for kids….if I’m not cruel

March 18, 2009 at 2:32 pm (General) (, )

  • Beowulf  (Can you imagine: Beowulf Hunter Offman = Wolf Hunter Offman!)
  • Sirius! (continues the star theme)

MANY more cringe-worthy hippie sci fi names I love after the jump:

  • Draco – is a constellation and gee I love the name but WAAAYYYY too associated.
  • The girl’s name Isota \i-so-ta\ is a variant of Isolde.
  • YLLI: Albanian name meaning “star.” This may have been the meaning of the name of the first Illyrian king, Hyllus, who died in 1225 BC.
  • Colm
  • Lando /Landon
  • Dax
  • Ryker
  • Kira
  • Asta /Aster / Astor
  • HOSHI (星): Japanese name meaning “star.” (I know I’ve listed this before. Tough)
  • The girl’s name Cara \c(a)-ra\ is pronounced KAR-ah. It is of Latin, Irish and Gaelic origin, and its meaning is “beloved; friend”. 20th-century coinage. Cari is a Spanish short form or “caridad”, meaning “dear, darling”, and is also the name of a star in the Orion constellation.
  • Arion has 3 variant forms: Arian, Arien and Aryon.  I don’t really care about the meaning, but it sounds very pretty – oh if only it didn’t sound like Aryan which has way too much baggage:
“The boy’s name Arion \a-rion\ is pronounced AR-ee-en. The name of a Greek poet and musician from about 700 BC. Mythology: the name of the magic horse born to Poseidon and Demeter. Arian is a Welsh form.”

Okay, and now, another great big list, most are still only suitable for sci fi writing:

Girls:

  • Altaira … Altair is a star of the first magnitude … the brightest star in the constellation Aquila.
  • Asta  … “Star-like; love.”
  • Astra … “Star.”  (I don’t care that it’s a car (like Astin) it was a damn celestial body FIRST!)
  • Cara … and is also the name of a star in the Orion constellation
  • Cassiopeia … both mother and daughter were placed among the stars after death
  • Danica … “Morning star; from Denmark.”
  • Hesper … “Evening; evening star.” … since the sun set and the evening star rose there
  • Hester … “Star.”
  • Itzel … “Star of the aurora sky.”
  • Mamie Short form of Margaret (Greek) “pearl” or Mary (Latin) “star of the sea”
  • Mare … Variant of Mary (Latin) “star of the sea”
  • Marian … Blend of Mary (Latin) “star of the sea” and Ann (Hebrew) “grace”
  • Mariel … Variant of Mary (Latin) “star of the sea”
  • Marietta … Diminutive of Mary (Latin) “star of the sea” via Marie
  • Marika … Variant of Mary (Latin) “star of the sea”.
  • Marion … Variant of Mary (Latin) “star of the sea”
  • Maristela … Blend of Mary (Latin) “star of the sea” and Estela (Persian) “star”.

  • Nova … Astronomy: a nova is a star that releases a tremendous burst of energy
  • Pleiade … Astronomy name: Pléiade is the group of stars called the “Seven Sisters” and named after the seven sisters in Greek mythology …
  • **Sesheta Egyptian mythology: Sesheta was the goddess of the stars and the patroness of writing and literature. (Pity about the awkwardness of the name)
  • Sidra … “Of the stars.”
  • **Siria … Sirius, the Dog Star … is the brightest star in the constellation. (I hadn’t though of feminising it! Brilliant!) – apart from the ‘Syria’ baggage…
  • Thurayya … “Star.”
  • Twyla … May be related to the French word for star, “étoile”
  • Vega … Name of the brightest star in the group of stars called Lyra.
  • (How about Lyra then?)
  • Vespera … “Evening star.”
  • Wynstelle Blend of Wynne (Welsh) “fair, pure” and Stella (Latin) “star”.
  • Zona … The name of the stars that make up the belt in the constellation of Orion.

Boys:

  • Altair … The name of the brightest star in the constellation Aquila. [3] (I don’t care that it’s a computer…although that kind of makes it cooler)
  • Antares … The name of a giant red star …
  • Hesperos … “Evening; evening star.” … since the sun set and the evening star rose there. [3]
  • Rigel … Rigel is the blue star of the first magnitude that marks the hunter’s left foot.
  • Sirius Star name: the brightest star seen from earth. (Of course!)
The most commonly used proper name of this star comes from the Latin Sīrius, from the Ancient Greek Σείριος (Seirios, “glowing” or “scorcher“)
  • Orion -  Greek mythology: Orion was a mighty hunter
  • Arcturus

Here, have some more Hunter names too…

Hehe look:

ESTERI: Finnish form of Persian Esther, meaning “star.”

And oh, look, a Crowley connection:

“All of this is very ironic when one looks yet deeper into Crowley’s secret connections. Crowley was not only involved in the OTO but was also a member of an arcane secret society known as the A:.A:. (Argenteum Astrum) or the Order of the Silver Star. The “silver star” referred to is Sirius itself, the most prominent in the heavens and positioned as the chief star in the ancient constellation “Phoenix”. The ancient Assyrians and Phoenicians both derive their name from this legacy. “

” In occult tradition, Sirius is the Hidden God or “the sun behind the sun”. As the moon reflects the sun, so does the sun reflect Sirius. This concept was expressed in The Book of the Law when Crowley wrote “The Khabs is in the Khu, not the Khu is in the Khabs.” The word Khab means star while Khu refers to light. What is being taught here is that collective “wisdom” often assumes that the stars emanate light. The truth of the matter is that the stars are in the light and are merely reflecting it.”

  2. Morrow said,

I’ve been throwing around the name Zephyr – Meaning: ‘the West Wind’ – of late… although when I say I’ve been throwing it around I’ve not thrown it too far… it’s just been bumping around in my head with all the other rubbish in there at the moment. It’s a funny old world where the places in my head won’t bleed out into the empty place in my heart… but then it’s always been that way… and the world’s always been a funny old one… well ever since I can remember anyway…

Morrow too, is a name I’m throwing around – another Pseudonym to hide behind, just one more mask… what’s another mask, when you’ve forgotten what the skin looks like.

Like the new blog by the way… funny thing is I was just learning about wordpress in class yesterday… although when I say learning, it was more like wanting to strangle the teacher, the computer and the students next to me…
